Potato gnocchi baked in garlic sage cream with Gruyere and Parmesan until bubbling and golden. A fast comfort-food bake for weeknights or holidays.
This creamy sage gnocchi gratin takes the feel of a classic French-style cream and cheese bake and applies it to store-bought potato gnocchi. The result is a weeknight-friendly dish with very little prep but enough richness to feel special on a holiday table or Sunday dinner spread.
Because the gnocchi cooks straight in the cream, you skip the peeling, slicing, and pre-boiling that usually come with a gratin-style side. It is a useful shortcut when you want comfort food without a long build-up.
Potato gnocchi thickens the cream slightly as it bakes, so the sauce ends up coating each piece instead of staying loose in the dish. Garlic and sage bring the savory depth, while Gruyere and Parmesan create both melt and browning.
Nutmeg is optional, but it fits naturally with cream-based bakes and gives the dish a subtle warmth. A short rest after baking is what brings the texture together.
Mix everything directly in the baking dish so the gnocchi gets evenly coated. It is fine if some pieces sit above the cream at first because the bake will bubble up and cover them as it cooks.
Use the top rack only if your oven browns gently. In a hotter oven, a center rack gives you better control so the cheese colors deeply without turning bitter.
Serve this gratin hot while the edges are bubbling and the top is crisp. A simple green salad or steamed vegetables are enough alongside it because the dish is already rich and starch-forward.
Leftovers keep for up to 3 days in the fridge. Reheat covered in the oven with a small splash of milk or cream if the sauce has tightened too much.
One serving is one-sixth of the dish. As a side, pair it with roast chicken, fish, or a bean-based main plus a generous green vegetable.
Training day: keep the full serving and match it with a lean protein and a big portion of vegetables. Rest day: use a slightly smaller portion and build out the plate with broccoli, green beans, spinach, mushrooms, or a crisp salad.
If you want to shift the meal around this dish, grilled chicken breast, white beans, or salmon are easy protein partners. Tenderstem broccoli, courgette, and peas are practical vegetable additions that fit the flavor profile well.

Freshly grate the cheese for the smoothest melt and best browning.
If your gnocchi are refrigerated and clumped together, separate them before mixing into the cream.
Let the dish rest for 5 to 10 minutes so the sauce thickens slightly before serving.
If the top browns too fast, cover loosely with foil for the final 10 minutes.

Rich, cozy, and very good with a simple green salad on the side.

I used shelf-stable gnocchi and it worked well. Resting it before serving definitely helped the sauce settle.

Extremely easy for something that tastes this rich. The sage made it feel perfect for a cold evening.
